I am interested in informational graphics and designs and for this project, I would like to challenge something I haven’t tried before. While i was researching, I reminded of the Melina&keith incident which happened in 2005. The Melina & Keith was a fishing boat, but it sank off the coast of Newfoundland¬†killing four crew members in 2005.¬†¬†I am familar with the incident becuase I had a chance to write a research paper about it and felt really sorry for the crews and their families.¬†I was shocked and very frustrated when I¬†heared about the incident. When I read the incident report for the research paper, I was confused because of overwhelming information (The report consists of 15 pages of texts). I thought it would be nice if I could contribute to visualize the incident. I would like to make a booklet abot the Melina & Keith incident visualizing why and how it happened. I hope my booklet could¬†help people to understand the tragedy better and caution small mistakes can bring such a tragic deaths.

I will mainly use vector images generated by illustrator and try to avoid too many texts. I want this booklet to be visually strong and easy to understand as an informational work. I will upload more processes soon!

I think my posters would be placed at the bus stops, streets, and shopping mall. Considering the context of the posters, I think the shopping mall especially the food court where people spend money on food will be the best place to be presented.

This is¬†HBO’s¬†Canne award¬†winning outdoor advertising.¬†

The campaign featured a four-minute film projected on to the side of a building that allowed “viewers to become voyeurs watching eight different apartments encompassing life, death and everything in between”. HBO picked up the grand prix award for outdoor advertising in Cannes for the projection installation, titled “Voyeur”.

I am interested in advertising industries and I think the outdoor ads  especially have a lot of creative possibilities. Here are some BBC outdoor ads which I love. The use of medium and urban space is perfectly communicating what BBC aims to show.

Final posters

I created two corresponding posters as a series to communicate the children’s hunger issue. The poster of the African girl is designed to stress the hunger issue in Africa while the second poster is for broader world and to show the value of one dollar to the poor and hungry kids. The two posters have the same structure and same elements such as the big image of one child, red box, text and logo to achieve the cohesiveness between the two posters. Though it took a lot of time to create two, I like the posters as a series and I wish to create more if time allows.¬†

Carlos said that the posters will be printed by 9:30 Monday morning¬†because they are in big size, so I guess I will be able to bring the posters during the crit. I am excited to see my posters and all of you guys’ ūüôā see you on Monday!

While I was doing the first poster, I had another version of the poster and I liked it too. Though it took a lot of time, I decided to work further on the another version to create a series. At the first, the second version started with the same image of the African child. And this poster communicates what one dollar can do for the poor kids. I wrote what one dollar can do for the children in many countries while the first poster only focuses on the African children.

Looking the both posters, I thought that it would be better to have variety of children’s images because this version is communicating the hunger in many other countries (broader world) while the first poster speaks about hunger in Africa. I illustrated the Asian boy with an empty rice bowl and another child next to him (somehow the child at the right side is¬†disappeared in this image). And then I also illustrated 10 of 1 liter milk instead of the text to see how they look like. I was planning to change all the text part (7 children, 200 eggs, 2 kg of rice, and a child) into illustrations, but I was concerned that if the illustrations would communicate well without texts. I also thought that the entire poster would look too busy with all the different colours of the images overpowering the main images.¬†

Considering the cohesiveness with the first poser which has the texts only at the bottom part, I finally decided to go for texts-only for the second version too.  And then I removed the another boy at the right side because having one kid in the poster looked more engaging. I drew the boy using the pen tool and used the live trace tool for some details of the t-shirt.

For the final re-touch, I changed the background colour to the same colour of the first poster. I also changed the colour of the sentence at the bottom to black to differentiate from the words in red in the middle part and the first poster.
